Before Google introduced the panda, penguin, and hummingbird updates, webmasters used some black hat tricks to keep the algorithm together.

These techniques include adding required content words and cookies, link farming, blog spamming, and hidden links.

After seeing similar content, low quality content, and an abundance of content about wanted words, Google decided that customers deserve a better search experience.
Thus, after so many updates since 2014, Google has, for the most part, got rid of these websites by heavily punishing such poor content.

Ultimately, webmasters had to seek out white hat tricks to improve their off-page SEO. Let’s take a look at the off-page SEO factors affecting search rankings.

On-page SEO focuses on improving the user experience of a website by providing engaging and relevant content, utilizing the right sought word space, and ensuring search engine crawlers find their way. For the website to be improved.

It’s clear, if you want to improve your ranking in search results, you can’t ignore off-page SEO.
To improve your off-page SEO, you need to follow this off-page SEO checklist.

1. Link Profiles

Most of the fines that Google gives to websites is based on their link profiles. If you link to a spammy website, you may be putting your reputation at stake.

How can you avoid this?

To maintain your Link profile, you need to find good opportunities to link.
Before you start, understand that not all relationships are equally valuable. Some connections will affect search engines more than others.

Here are the factors you need to consider when reviewing the Link opportunity:

  • Domain Authority: Websites with higher domain authority will provide you with more valuable backlinks.
  • Content-Related: Links to websites that are related to your brand, product or industry provide the most value.
  • Anchor Text: Anchor text that relates to your content, product or brand will deliver a higher value.
  • Partner Website Backlink Link Profile: Links to websites with size backlink link profile will cost you more.

To check the DA of websites you want to write for, you can add a suitable bar extension in Google Chrome. You can get more details with the latest web analytics tools. Once you’ve found sites with good DA scores, pitch their content ideas.

2. Analyze and remove toxic backlinks

Backlink is a link from one website to another. Backlinks, also known as unbound links, backlinks are important for SEO because they help search engines determine how relevant and reliable a website is.

Toxic backlinks are links to websites that are considered of lower quality, or even more dangerous, to other websites.
They can negatively impact your website’s reputation and ranking in search engine results.. Toxic backlinks can come from spammy websites, link forms, or malicious content such as websites.

3. Research Contest Backlinks

Before you embark on most of your off-page SEO work, it’s helpful to research your competitors’ backlink strategy first. To do so, you’ll need a tool that can detect which sites are connected to your competitors’ sites

In this case, I used Summers’ backlink gap analysis tool to compare backlinks on my websites against competitors’ websites.

Filtering for weak backlinks, meaning sites where my rivals have more backlinks than my website, I can identify key websites where my rivals has more backlinks.

4. Do try to convince publishers to use follow links

As I’ve mentioned, having toxic backlinks can result in a penalty on your website. This is why so many sites have added adds to link “no followers” tags.

These number follow links have been added to deter web crawlers from following them, meaning that they will just ignore the link. This means that it will not affect your grade score, whether it is positive or negative.

Here is the problem:

“Do Follow” Having a website with back-to-back links to your website will increase the reach of your website, thus increasing your chances of being ranked.

The best way to get “do follow” links is to compile a list of all the “no follow” backlinks on your website and contact these websites for “do follow.” instead of links “No Following” Links. To find external links, pointing to your website, just use the Backlink Link audit tool. There are many platforms that offer backlinking editing tools such as Seamrush and Ahrifs.

The best approach for off-page SEO

Often, marketers think that backlinks are the only component you need to focus on off-page SEO. But you’ll just be scratching the surface with them.

You also need to create unique and shareable content. As it may sound, content is still king. If you create content that people want to share, you’ve won half the battle. It’s better to get quality connections from sites that are related to your niche or product.

Furthermore, you need to spend some time checking the backlink profile of any website you want to associate with. Beware of websites that look spammy. Finding high domain authority websites with rich backlink profiles should be your goal.

Off-page SEO technique that works

1. Quality content

Content creation is usually thought of as part of on-page SEO. However, it is a factor that affects off-page SEO as well. Without insightful or shareable content, you won’t be able to engage your audience.

When you publish quality content, others are more likely to participate. It can even lead you to natural backlinks.

When you’re creating content, don’t stick to just blog posts.

Explore general questionnaires, videos, infographics, images and other content types of podcasts. With this strategy, you can get higher quality backlinks from high authority websites.

Google mentions that your website should:

  • Use the required words in specific places within your pages.
  • Use social media to actively promote your content and engage with the community.
  • Get your website looked up and running great.

3. Broken back link building

It has little to do with your site, and everything to do with other competitors and websites with the same niche as you.

Broken Link Building is all about finding broken backlinks on websites and asking them to replace those broken links with you.

As shown above, I used acronym to locate those broken backlinks. In order to do so, me:

  • Ahrifs’ went to site explorer
  • Entered the URL of an odd website
  • Best pages by selected “backlinks”
  • Selected “404 not found”

A recent study of over 80K home pages suggests that 30.7% of them have one or more breakdowns..This is about a third of all sites, making it a great way to build more backlinks.

4. Find the possibilities of quality backlinks

Searching for the possibilities of quality backlinks can be a daunting task. I like to use seamrosh for backlink link profiling. This alerts me when my portfolio of unbound links changes.

Also, it suggests a change from authentic domains so it doesn’t affect my rankings.

In addition, there are many other Backlink tools that you can use to check the quality of backlinks.

Tools like Link, LinkDy are great for insights on link building strategies for your competitors’ link.. It provides you with a list of pages that are connected to your competitors with all the important metrics.

Once you find relevant, authentic sites, pitch their content ideas to guest posts. Instead of guest blogging multiple times for a single website, try writing for different blogs.. This will help you reach a wider audience.

Plus, you can also get quality backlinks through reviews, compliments, infographics, podcasts and social media access.

5. Author Rank

Although Google has shut down its authorization experience, some SEO experts claim there is still a part to play in author rankings.

For the Unpublished, copywriting was a feature that allowed publishers to create their own digital signatures. Using this feature, publishers can link any author’s line to their profile on another website. The link helped Google Crawler understand more about the author’s identity.

However, in 2014, Google stopped rankings..

One of the main reasons the program’s abandonment was that consumers did not appreciate the author’s pieces very much.. At the same time, not all the authors adopted the program.

Author status, a consumer-made term, relates to this concept. This refers to a numerical score that Google assigned writers based on webpage content.

If the author’s status is still relevant then there is no consensus among experts. However, some SEO experts believe that it is still an important factor that affects page ranking. Others also say we may have to look at the author’s position more personal in the future.

6. Write guest posts for high authority sites

Guest posts were all the hype in the late 2000s and early 2010s. But Google has been pretty strict about guest posts since the mid-2010s..

That doesn’t mean you should ignore this excellent off-page SEO strategy..
Guest posts were originally a way to add backlinks to your website in an article, without caring for the content itself. This resulted in Google examining the types of articles, which led to many people abandon strategy.

The thing is, high quality content, written for a high authority website, having 1 or 2 backlinks on your website is still a great strategy for creating a backlinking.

I write guest posts for certain publications including Forbes and Medium. These guest posts help expand my audience’s reach, and increase organic traffic to my website.

7. Shared reference and shared agreement.

Co-reference and co-consensus are key factors for off-page SEO. When two different sources mention the same website or brand, it’s called co-reference. In the previously mentioned example, HubSpot’s infographic is shared by various websites.

Co-occurrence means the proximity, presence and frequency of relevant words by various websites. Co-coronavirus contains keywords that are similar and relevant, but perhaps not exactly the same.
Simply put, the participation is focused on similar content on different websites. On the other hand, co-reference looks at how different websites are interconnected.

Using a combination of these two strategies, you can create a bold backlink profile. These strategies can help you build your brand by boosting trust and engagement.

8. Create high quality infographics

With backlinks in mind, a great way to achieve them is to create high-quality infographics that other sites want to use.

When a site uses your infographic, they need to link to the original source of the image, which will be your article.
According to HubSpot, infographics are the fourth most commonly developed content for content marketing.

Small businesses can’t afford expensive infographics, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create engaging content. There are a lot of great tools online, like Canva, that are completely free, and easy to use.

By creating these infographics, you’ll increase your chances of getting backlinks, especially from small, quirky websites, which help boost your authority.

9. Pay attention to the long form content

It has been proven time and again that long form content ranks higher than short positions.. According to this study, the average word length of 10 search results in Google is nearly 2,200.

Keep in mind, having a long article isn’t a reason for Google’s webpage to rank high, it’s the same factors in long-form content that give it the right to slay.

One of the biggest ratings of long-form content is that long-form content gets more backlinks. According to the same study above, long form content with 7000+ words gets 3x more shares and backlinks than posts with less worded.

A great example of one of my high performance articles. With a word count of over 5,000 words, it has approximately 1,500 backlinks.

10. Audit branded searches about your business

A brand search is when someone searches for your brand name in a search engine like Google. These searches may include your whole brand name, or a few phrases in addition to your brand name such as, “Shane Barker Influencer Marketing.”

When looking up the term, “Shane Barker Influencer Marketing,” the first webpage in Google search results is my influencer marketing services page on

The second search result is an effective marketing article on and the third is my LinkedIn profile.

Now you have to audit these unbranded phrases to make the most of them.

An easy way to do this is to use the GSC performance report.

To make this tomorrow better, you’ll need to create high quality meta explanations and captions, as well as ensure you’re using the right required words for those websites.

11. Create and spend time on branded YouTube channel.

If you want to boost your website’s brand signals, you need to start a YouTube channel. YouTube has 122 million active users every day. If you’re neglecting your ,

YouTube channel, it’s a huge audience you’re missing out on.

It may seem useless at first, especially if you have low views and follower count in the beginning. But regularly publishing content related to your website and brand will be beneficial in the long run.

Once your videos start getting a few thousand reviews, you’ll see a spike in customers coming to your site, or searching for your brand on Google.

Another reason to make YouTube videos is to add them to their articles. According to Vistia, any video content websites had an average page time of 6 minutes, while those without videos had just 4.3 minutes.

Creating YouTube videos can also help you get featured on the results page first via video. This happens often, especially when people “seeking terms like.”

As you can see from the above example, when I “find out how to build a website” the first result was a wix article, people asking, and then videos. Creating content on YouTube can help you get on the front page, even if your articles aren’t.

12. Create content that is backed by research

Now, when I say research, I don’t mean to mention research done by other researchers and websites.
Conducting your own research can be time consuming, and most likely cost a little extra, but it is worth it.

The content that comes with the research you do will greatly help your off-page SEO, just as infographics and YouTube videos do.


When other websites write you similar content but don’t have the statistics to back up what they’re writing, they probably. Gotta look for it somewhere else. That’s where you sink and get backlinks.

They will probably use any data you’ve researched and put it into their article with their link.
Content backed by this research can also increase social media share significantly.

So, as you may have seen again, spending time and money on creating home content like infographics, videos, and research may not seem so important at first, but if you want to stay on top of your off-page SEO game So, you need to invest in them.

13. Garner positive review online

It all boils down to EAT.

A – Authority
T – the ability to trust

Now, E.A.T. doesn’t necessarily affect your rankings directly but it has to do with how Google’s QualityRotor team decides which website ranks higher, vs. what They have low standards.

Google’s Quality Router team is one way off a guide letter, which Google once again recently posted.. Here are the guidelines if you’d like to take a look. But creating content with E.A.T. in mind, will lead to high quality content..

How is the element reviewed in all of this?

Reviews can be a measure of credibility and expertise that, in turn, can lead to a business ending up on the second or third result page, especially from a local SEO perspective. Google doesn’t want to promote businesses that are not professional or reliable

Now you’re thinking, well I don’t have a business, so how do I build my reputation on my blog?

To do this, you need to optimize your landing page. Any kind of compliments, awards, big companies you’ve worked for, ebooks, and other expert sources you mention. It all helps to build authority, shows you’re an expert in your field, and that you can be trusted.

In addition to this page, I also list my bio, some key needed words and quotes, as well as a link to my podcast, further revealing my expertise and authority in my niche.

14. Featured in the round up posts.

Roundup posts are a fun, and a great way to get some extra attention on your website.

When you have a small business, reaching out to large brands for partnership can be intimidating, but it’s essential if you want to build authority and gain some recognition among a huge audience.

Big brands have a huge amount of monthly traffic, and if you add value to their website, most are happy to share some of it with you.
